Your kid can make something real for the Thanksgiving table. These eight live classes each end with something in front of the family: a dish they cooked, cookies they decorated, a poem they wrote, a granny square coaster, a clay piece, hand-drawn place cards, a painted pattern, and a handmade craft. Every one is taught live by a working artist.

Thanksgiving lands on November 26 this year, which gives you about three weeks. That is the sweet spot. Enough time for a few sessions, not so much time that the plan evaporates. Here is what your kid could put on the table.

## 1\. The dish

Imagine your kid telling the table they made part of dinner. Not helped. Made.

Kids learn real cooking techniques and kitchen confidence while preparing actual food. The photo above is the kind of dish that comes out of it. Start now and your kid could own a side dish or a whole recipe by the 26th.

## 2\. The dessert

Store-bought pie is fine. Cookies your kid decorated are a conversation.

![Sugar cookies decorated with pink and white royal icing flowers](https://sharetribe.imgix.net/6632654c-3399-41a1-b056-865f02849a6a/6a8632b9-f872-41d0-a76d-1846145b880f?auto=format&crop=edges&fit=crop&h=600&w=800&s=cb2c8e80fb855c0f60bdbd49f7dcd261)

Kids prepare three different royal icing consistencies, ready for decorating cookies, and the ingredients list comes ahead of class. A plate of these on the dessert table beats anything in a bakery box.

## 3\. The poem

Somewhere between dinner and dessert, someone should say what they are thankful for. Hand the moment to your kid.

Kids write original poems expressing emotion, reflection, and observation. A gratitude poem, written by your kid and read out loud before the meal, is the kind of thing grandparents remember for years.

## 4\. The napkins

This one is a sleeper pick. Your kid designs the pattern on the table.

![Repeat textile patterns in yellow, black, and rust made with block printing](https://sharetribe.imgix.net/6632654c-3399-41a1-b056-865f02849a6a/6adee02f-e921-4cdf-9aa4-05abf1be2c89?auto=format&crop=edges&fit=crop&h=600&w=800&s=047a96ca759caaee8c45da876c782194)

Kids design their own custom repeat patterns using block printing, the stamping technique behind real fabric design. Stamp the pattern onto napkins, a table runner, or place cards, and the whole table carries their signature.

## 5\. The place cards

Or go classic. Hand-drawn place cards, one per guest.

![Floral sketches drawn on a tablet with a stylus](https://sharetribe.imgix.net/6632654c-3399-41a1-b056-865f02849a6a/6ac0040a-d3b2-4db5-b319-691d02ef0634?auto=format&crop=edges&fit=crop&h=600&w=800&s=8196179b5ce6870615705000ebee9169)

Florals and Ornaments, for ages 10 to 18\. Kids learn to draw florals, patterns, and ornamental designs, turning nature and everyday objects into their own artwork. A set of hand-drawn place cards takes an afternoon and looks like you hired someone.

## 6\. The coasters

Hot dishes and cold drinks need somewhere to land. A crocheted coaster, made by your kid, lands differently than a store one.

![A handmade crocheted granny square in pale blue](https://sharetribe.imgix.net/6632654c-3399-41a1-b056-865f02849a6a/6a90640b-b090-4858-ad56-726bad67d5c8?auto=format&crop=edges&fit=crop&h=600&w=800&s=77769dfa99a4e43fd476bd47a5e85e40)

Kids master the classic granny square, the foundation stitch for blankets, sweaters, and tote bags, with short teaching videos linked in the class page. One square is a coaster. A few more and you have a gift for every guest.

## 7\. The centerpiece

Every table needs something in the middle. This year it can be theirs.

![Small handmade clay charms, a pink mushroom and a pink clown, held in a hand](https://sharetribe.imgix.net/6632654c-3399-41a1-b056-865f02849a6a/6abc71fc-81c5-420a-9266-42508803f7e0?auto=format&crop=edges&fit=crop&h=600&w=800&s=3450d375cc366d1ab5f1c199f7add18f)

[Ary Flo](https://wimzee1.mysharetribe.com/u/6abc2b57-9b77-47d6-9b49-25163b7141f4?utm%5Fsource=blog&utm%5Fmedium=cta&utm%5Fcampaign=thanksgiving-makes) teaches Mini clay crafting, in group sessions, for ages 3 to 18\. Kids make easy clay crafts: charms, earrings, or little figures. Scale one up, or make a whole little village of them, and you have a centerpiece no one else has.

## 8\. The handmade piece

And for the youngest kids, the simplest promise of all. They make something, and it goes on the table.

![A young child painting with watercolors and craft supplies on a white table](https://sharetribe.imgix.net/6632654c-3399-41a1-b056-865f02849a6a/6aca9489-cd63-4217-a748-14b4a7c6fc73?auto=format&crop=edges&fit=crop&h=600&w=800&s=d081ac994b5abaa8adee611a43b5803f)

[Sandra](https://wimzee1.mysharetribe.com/u/6a88d30f-9eb6-4328-bd84-76f320c2a06c?utm%5Fsource=blog&utm%5Fmedium=cta&utm%5Fcampaign=thanksgiving-makes) teaches Fun Arts and Crafts for Kids, for ages 3 to 12\. Kids explore different mediums and create a chosen arts and crafts project in a flexible, child-led session, using materials from home. No prior experience needed. Whatever they make, it sits on the table next to everything else, and they will point at it all evening.

## Book it this week

Thanksgiving is November 26\. That is enough time for two or three sessions of any class above, which is enough for your kid to make something real. Pick the one that fits your kid, or if you are torn, [take the quiz](https://blog.joinwimzee.com/which-creative-class-fits-your-kid/?utm%5Fsource=blog&utm%5Fmedium=cta&utm%5Fcampaign=thanksgiving-makes). Four questions, one recommendation. Then book it this week, while the holiday is still far enough away to make something.

If you want the longer guide to picking the right fit, it is here: [How to Choose a Creative Class Your Kid Will Actually Love](https://blog.joinwimzee.com/how-to-choose-a-creative-class-your-kid-will-actually-love/?utm%5Fsource=blog&utm%5Fmedium=cta&utm%5Fcampaign=thanksgiving-makes). And if you are curious why making beats consuming for kids, I wrote about the research in [Born Creative](https://blog.joinwimzee.com/born-creative-what-the-research-says-kids-lose-and-how-they-keep-it/?utm%5Fsource=blog&utm%5Fmedium=cta&utm%5Fcampaign=thanksgiving-makes).

What would your kid most want to make for the Thanksgiving table?

## Questions parents ask

**Can my kid really contribute a dish to Thanksgiving dinner after a couple of classes?**
Yes, and that is the point of starting now. Cooking 101 teaches real techniques, not just recipes, and royal icing turns store-bought cookies into something worth showing off. Book the first session this week and the class page will tell you exactly what to expect.

**What if my kid is too young for the detailed crafts?**
Match the class to the age range on each class page. The arts and crafts class, the clay class, and the cooking class all start at age 3\. The drawing, crochet, and poetry classes start at 10\. Younger kids do better with the open-ended making. Older kids can handle the detailed work.

**How far in advance should we book?**
Book this week. Thanksgiving is November 26, and two or three sessions before then is the comfortable pace. One-on-one classes can move faster than group ones, so check the class page for the format.

**Do we need to buy supplies first?**
Check the class page before you buy anything. Most of these start with basics you already own: paper, pencils, crayons, kitchen staples, whatever is in the junk drawer. The cookie class sends its ingredients list ahead of time.
