Making Fruit Fun for Little Ones
Fruit can be more than something we serve at snack time. It can be a chance to explore, play, and make sweet little memories together.
Many children are naturally drawn to the bright colors of fruit—the sunny yellow of a banana, the deep purple of grapes, or the cheerful red of a strawberry. Those colors can spark curiosity and make learning about fruit feel like a fun little adventure. What will it smell like? Is it soft or juicy? What color is inside?
One of my favorite things about sharing fruit with Theodore is seeing the curiosity in his eyes. Here are a few easy ways to explore together:
Let your child choose. Offer two fruits and let your little one pick which one to try. Giving them a choice can make snack time feel exciting.
Explore with your senses. Talk about the fruit’s color, shape, smell, and texture. You might ask, “Does it feel smooth or bumpy?” or “What colors do you see?”
Create a colorful plate together. Arrange fruit into a rainbow, a silly face, or a simple pattern. It doesn’t need to look perfect—the fun is in making it together.
Tell a little fruit story. Imagine the fruit is going on an adventure. Where is the strawberry traveling? Who might it meet along the way? You can even learn where the fruit grows or what its seeds look like.
Keep it relaxed and follow your child’s interest. They may taste something new, or they may just want to look, smell, and talk about it. Either way, you’re sharing time and making learning playful.
With young children, stay close during snack time and serve fruit in a way that’s safe and age-appropriate.
